Each year, the Insurance Department handles thousands of automobile insurance complaints from New York State consumers. The complaint ranking includes only those complaints closed by the Insurance Department, not complaints made directly to insurers. Consumers are encouraged to try to settle their differences directly with their insurers, and if that doesnt work, then they should complain to the Insurance Department.
The 2009 Annual Ranking of Automobile Insurance Complaints ranks 40 insurance companies or groups of companies by the number of automobile insurance complaints upheld against them in 2008 as a percentage of their average 2007-2008 New York State auto premium.
